Although I suggested just above that emailing and chat are the same, in fact, they do have fundamental differences that you should be aware of.
But, whether using chat or email, just remember that they are both about making a great first impression, one that makes the other party want to get to know you more.
Now, chatting on an instant messenger service is different to email in that you don't necessarily get so much time to consider or think about your response. But, just because you are 'chatting' doesn't mean that you have to respond absolutely immediately when in chat mode.
If the person that you are chatting to asks something that is a little difficult, or poses a query that you need a few seconds to think about, here's a tip. Head for the bathroom (either in reality of in a manner of speaking)!
That will always buy you a few moments, although, of course, you cannot use the same excuse every five minutes!
And, the second thing to remember when using a chat facility is that less is always more, so keep your responses short, and leave the person at the other end guessing a little, if anything. Remember the point earlier about retaining some degree of mystery.
Apply that to your chat conversations as well. In a few minutes, we will get into how to send off that first email, but for know just realize that you do have what it takes to be a person that will get to meet others.
